Beethoven: Symphony No. 7II. Allegretto

Project Info:

The Allegretto from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable movements in the orchestral repertoire. Since its premiere in 1813, it has been performed countless times by ensembles ranging from student orchestras to the world’s finest professional orchestras, including groups such as the Northern Sinfonia, Foxboro High School Symphony Orchestra, and Anima Eterna.

A few years ago, the Reddit Symphony, along with our concertmistress Arianna, presented a virtual performance of this movement. While the project was well-intentioned, the final mix had some rough spots. For former RSO members who performed this piece—or any Beethoven enthusiasts—this new virtual project offers a refined and exciting opportunity to revisit one of the composer’s most beloved works.

Important Performer Notes:

Reference Tracks: All Performers

  • The reference track contains a mix of interpretations and tempo variations. Always follow the written music as your primary source.

  • If in doubt, consult Darren (conducting) and Arianna.

  • Arianna’s reference track does not include voiceover rehearsal cues. If your part lacks rehearsal markings, you may create your own voiceover cues for convenience.

  • Playback errors may occur in the reference track; focus on your written part rather than any anomalies in the audio (except Arianna’s verbal cues and Darren’s conducting).

  • Avoid adding any small notehead cues from the reference track to your part.

Interpretation:

  • Aim to emulate Anima Eterna’s performance style where possible.

  • Bass Clarinet, Saxes, Trombones, Euphonium, and Tuba were not part of Beethoven’s original orchestration; their inclusion is optional but appreciated.

Orchestral Woodwinds:

  • During slower, melodic passages: play with gentle expression (leggiero and maestoso) where appropriate.

  • In sprightlier passages: maintain fragility with subtle joviality.

Oboe:

  • Fill in Oboe 2 parts, as the original Reddit Symphony performance omitted them.

Clarinets, Horns, & Trumpets:

  • Original parts are in A, E, and D. Transposed parts in Bb, C, and F are provided for convenience.

Saxophones:

  • Avoid vibrato where possible, but a subtle classical vibrato is acceptable, particularly when matching other woodwinds.

Baritone Saxophone:

  • Take low written A naturals 8va if your instrument cannot reach them.

Bass Clarinet:

  • If low C notes are unplayable, play them 8va. An alternate bass clarinet part (transposed from the first bassoon) is available.

Brass

  • Louder climactic passages should convey power, similar to “throttling up a vehicle,” but avoid overplaying.

  • High strings and winds should maintain a rich, full texture even on passages marked mezzo-forte or louder.

Strings

  • In the fugue-inspired passage, emulate a Baroque style, then allow the woodwinds to carry the melody naturally.

  • Divisi parts must be recorded completely, not partially.

  • Aim for a medium-sized string section sound.

Woodwinds & Brass

  • Multiple submissions per part are encouraged for this project, reverting to previous submission rules.

Timpani

  • Sign-ups are first-come, first-served. Beethoven wrote no additional percussion for this work.
